Desires Changing

My Common Prayer book led me to Psalm 37 today. Verse 4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

And a small voice inside says, really? Really?

And then another small voice says, Yes, and here’s why you know this is true… when someone delights in God their desires change. See, when you first begin a walk along God’s pathway, and you read that verse you think, cool, now I’m going to get whatever I want. But, when you’ve been walking a while, and you read that verse you think, cool, I actually desire whatever God desires. When you spend time with God, your desires change. That’s the way it always works.

This has been my experience, too, Jonathan. For almost 25 years my own personal desire was strong to give birth as a path to having children. When I spent time in prayer with God and in noticing the pull to being open to other ideas, my desire changed. I signed up for 10 weeks of foster parenting classes and became a licensed foster parent this summer. A few months later I welcomed a 1 month baby girl into my care. The experience has been amazing! More than that, the opportunity to nurture and love this sweet baby girl is better than anything I could have dreamed up or “desired” on my own. My heart is so full.

  2. Wow, that’s great. Thank you for sharing. Sometimes we don’t even know what we desire until we “delight” in Him.
